The Courage to Say “This Isn’t Working”

Two hundred and fifty years ago, a group of imperfect but determined people signed their names to a document that could have cost them everything. They weren’t venting about bad leadership—they were declaring independence, knowing full well it might cost them their homes, families, even their lives. They didn’t do it because everything was clear or easy. They did it because some things were unmistakably wrong. That’s what I reflect on each July 4th. Not just the fireworks, but the courage it takes to say, “This system no longer works. Something has to change.”

That same spirit—the drive to fix what’s broken—shows up in quieter places too. I’ll never compare fixing a bad interface to founding a nation, but there’s something deeply human about noticing a problem and deciding not to ignore it. That’s what UX means to me. Not theory, but real-life friction: the customer who gives up after failing to log in, the teammate who clicks the wrong thing again and again, the tech who’s stuck because the screen lies about what the system is doing. No one yells. They just waste time and grow tired. Until someone clears the path.

When you fix a layout, rewrite a form, or simplify a process, you’re not just making it “prettier”—you’re giving people back momentum. It’s a quiet kind of freedom, the opposite of delay and confusion. Every time someone says, “That makes so much more sense now,” it feels like a small win. Not a revolution, but a real change that matters to the person using the thing you built.

Good UX is built on respect. Respect for people’s time, their intelligence, and their need to get something done without unnecessary struggle. Just as the founding ideals of this country were rooted in dignity and self-determination, good design is rooted in clarity. When you get that right, people don’t just use the tool—they trust it. They stop dreading it. They do their work faster, cleaner, with more confidence.

So this July 4th, I’m grateful for the kind of freedom that others fought for—and also for the chance to keep pushing back against the small tyrannies that still show up in our systems. UX might sound like a tech term, but to me, it’s personal. Because every time I make something easier to use, I’m not just simplifying—I’m clearing the way for someone else to move forward.
