What Visitors Want on Their First Click

()

(And Why Most Sites Miss It)

What visitors want when they reach your site—whether through a Klaviyo campaign, a Google search, or a referral from a friend—they’ve already made a small decision: to give you a shot.

But that click doesn’t mean they’re ready to buy. In fact, most of the time, they’re not even ready to contact you. They’re looking for orientation.

And too many websites confuse them instead.

The Click Is a Question

Every click is a kind of quiet question:

  • “Am I in the right place?”
  • “Do they offer what I need?”
  • “Can I trust this?”

If your landing page answers with clutter, corporate fluff, or an outdated design, you’ve missed the moment. The back button is right there—and they know how to use it.

Three Things Visitors Actually Want First

A sense of where they are Clear headings, visuals, or a short intro that says: We help people like you with this thing. Not a giant slider. Not a stock photo handshake. Confirmation you’re relevant Visitors want to see their problem reflected back at them. This could be a bold service headline, a recent blog post, or even a “Clients We Help” box. A gentle suggestion for what to do next Not five buttons. Not a blinking chatbot. Just a single action that makes sense—read more, view pricing, or see examples.

Why Most Sites Miss It

  • Because they try to impress instead of guide.
  • Or they throw every option at the wall hoping something sticks.
  • Or they just haven’t stepped into the shoes of a first-time visitor in years.
  • Take Action: Try This Today
  • Look at your top entry page in Google Analytics (hint: it’s probably not your homepage).
  • Now ask yourself:
  • What is this page saying to someone brand new? Is it obvious what they should do next? Would you stay?
  • Coming Next: Offer Fewer Paths, Not More Clutter

Need to influence leadership with clear ideas—even if that leadership is you? Get a one-page snapshot you can act on or forward today.
