Building My Freelancing Website: A Step-by-Step Journey

Building HyperLynx has been a fun but educational process. As someone who’s designed websites for clients, I thought doing my own would be a breeze. Spoiler alert: I was wrong. It wasn’t about the technical challenges—those I could handle—it was the balance between showcasing my skills, organizing my work, and ensuring it all looked cohesive. I wanted this site to reflect me.

I started with WordPress.com. Even though I’m comfortable with more advanced platforms, I wanted something reliable and simple for ongoing updates. After testing several themes like AltoFocus and Radcliffe 2, I landed on a structure that combined sleek visuals with enough space for my portfolio and photography work. I’m still tweaking things, but it’s getting there.

A major challenge was category organization. At first, I created a ton of categories for every possible niche (photography, web design, passive income, and so on). But I quickly realized that I was overcomplicating it. Streamlining was the way forward. I ended up simplifying photography into one single category and adding Productivity—because let’s be real, that’s a big part of my life.

The hardest part was the logo. It had to be just right. I played around with designs until I simplified it to something that felt professional yet approachable. If you’re reading this after my launch, I’d love your feedback. It’s still a work in progress, but it feels great to finally have a digital home that reflects my freelance journey. If you’re thinking of building your own site, my advice is to start simple and focus on what you want visitors to see. You can always add the bells and whistles later.
